Greg Norman to Play in the 2008 AT&T Classic

(Duluth, Georgia, April 22, 2008) -- Greg Norman, one of golf's legendary performers for nearly three decades, will play in this year's AT&T Classic, May 12-18 at TPC Sugarloaf in Duluth. Norman adds further luster to a field that already includes Stewart Cink, Retief Goosen, Charles Howell III, defending champion Zach Johnson and 151 more of the world's best players. They will compete for a first prize check of $990,000. Now in its 40th year, the 72-hole PGA TOUR event offers a total purse of $5.5 million and has contributed more than $16 million to local charities over the years. Here are some quick facts on Norman:

  • This will be a homecoming of sorts for Norman who designed the host venue, TPC Sugarloaf. It was his first U.S. creation and a course that has been universally praised by his golfing peers. Now there are 33 American courses and dozens more around the world. Norman played in the Classic the year Sugarloaf opened, firing a 10-under-par score of 278 which was good for 5th place tie. He has competed in Atlanta three times since but not after 2004.

  • The "Shark" is playing this year thanks to a one-time exemption earned by being in the top 50 on the career money list. He hasn't competed in more than seven events since 2002 and didn't play at all in 2007 for the first time since 1980. He did finish tied for 2nd at the late-season Merrill Lynch Shootout while partnering with Bubba Watson.

  • Norman owns 56 international titles, including the 1986 and 1993 British Opens and 20 events on the PGA TOUR. He was the 1995 PGA TOUR Player of the Year when he notched three victories - the Memorial Tournament, the Canon Greater Hartford Open, and NEC World Series of Golf - for a then-record $1,654,959 in earnings.

  • Norman has eight runner-up finishes in majors, including a playoff loss in each of the following: 1984 US Open; 1987 Masters; 1989 British Open; and 1993 PGA Championship.

  • He was the only player with three top-ten finishes in majors during 1996. Norman has been a three-time leading money winner on the PGA TOUR (1986, 1990 and 1995), a three-time Vardon Trophy winner (1986, 1990, and 1995), and a three-time Arnold Palmer Award winner for most wins in a single year (1988, 1989, and 1994).

  • From 1976-90, he won at least one tournament per-year worldwide, and in 1983, 1987, 1994, and 1995 he did not miss a single cut.

  • He was the first PGA TOUR player to reach $12 million in career earnings and also the first player to surpass the $10 million mark.

Tournament Note

DJ Gregory, a 30-year-old Savannah man with Cerebral Palsy and an abiding love of golf, is on a quest in 2008. He plans to walk the course in each day of competition during each of the 37 weeks of FedExCup competition in 2008, and write about the experience of being a fan of the PGA TOUR while overcoming his disability. At each tournament, he follows one player for the week, speaking with him prior to competition and briefly afterwards. His thoughts and observations go into his blog on PGA TOUR.com, along with pictures he is taking along the way.
